In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, “vaulting ambition” takes the protagonist down a dangerous path and ultimately to a tragic end. History and literature illustrate the perils of overreaching all too clearly: high achievers don’t always succeed in balancing professional success with happier or healthier lives. Yet if leaders can achieve that balance, ambition can fuel outstanding personal and organizational accomplishments. This week, let’s explore some strategies that may help you reach your own goals with integrity—without neglecting those of the people you lead, your family, and society.

You’re a senior executive who aspires to be CEO. But are you sure you really want the role? Leaders who desire the top job should do some intense soul-searching first, according to McKinsey senior partners Carolyn Dewar, Scott Keller, Vikram Malhotra, and Kurt Strovink. “Take a gut check of your motivations and expectations,” they advise. “If it’s all about you, or if you’re doing it out of a sense of obligation, know that the top will be a hostile, extreme place where no one will rescue you during times of trouble.” For example, if your idea of acting like a CEO is to run the place any way you like, that’s an unsustainable motivation; a sustainable one would be to respond to all stakeholders and be accountable for everything. Without such shifts in mindset, “not only will you find that the effort required to be CEO outweighs any personal gain, but you will also be less likely to succeed,” the authors say.
