The United States is approaching its 250th birthday—an occasion for both celebration and reflection. This year, the country has also marked a presidential transition, which historically has offered a valuable lens through which to examine the country's progress and envision the opportunities ahead.

Drawing on McKinsey's extensive experience supporting leadership transitions across government and business, a key insight emerges: while the contexts differ, fundamental leadership principles remain universally applicable in navigating complex challenges and shaping future success.

Starting today and continuing for the next week, as part of our America at 250 series, we will offer one essay each day on the opportunities facing the nation. We hope these ideas will spur thoughtful and productive discussion in a way that is helpful for the country’s leaders, the people they serve, the companies they lead and work for, and the nation.

Here’s a sneak preview of what’s to come:

April 23: Business in a new geopolitical era

April 24: US government productivity

April 25: Performance for state governments

April 28: Empowering the US workforce

April 29: Powering a new era of energy demand

April 30: Advancing America's holistic health

May 1: ‘Inside-out' leadership
