Clean energy spells opportunity. With COP27 in the rearview, and an uncertain path toward the goal of net zero, many world leaders are beginning to chart their course in earnest. Clean hydrogen, defined as hydrogen produced with little or no carbon emissions, could be something of a silver bullet: by 2050, demand for hydrogen could abate more than 20 percent of global emissions. For countries with institutional experience processing hydrocarbons—a category including natural gas and petroleum—there’s a particular opportunity to create new sources of value and become leaders in future energy markets. In a new article, senior partners Tarek El Sayed and Rachid Majiti, partner Arnout de Pee, and their coauthors explore the opportunity, and break down four areas where hydrocarbon-rich countries should focus to realize the potential.
