A person holding a laptop is positioned to the right of the sphere and stands atop a three-dimensional polygon. A light shines from the center of the iris to the laptop.

Historically, automation has affected workers with lower education and skill levels. Generative AI is flipping the script: more-educated workers will likely experience the greatest degree of impact, say McKinsey’s Michael Chui and coauthors.

A horizontal bar chart shows the technical automation potential with and without generative AI (gen AI) in the United States, by education level, in 2023. The education levels are as follows: some college, high school diploma or equivalent, no high school degree, associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, and master’s, PhD, or higher. While the overall automation potential is higher at lower education levels, the degree of change in automation potential with gen AI is greatest for people at higher education levels. For people with some college and for those with a high school diploma or equivalent education level, the degree of change in automation potential with gen AI is only 16 and 13 percentage points, respectively. However, for people with a bachelor’s degree and for those with a master’s, PhD, or higher education level, the degree of change with gen AI is 24 and 29 percentage points, respectively.
