If a teenage Mauro Porcini could see himself now. Having grown up in a tiny house on the outskirts of Milan, sharing one bedroom with his brother and parents, by his mid-twenties he had founded a company with a titan of the Italian music industry. Now he’s the head of design at PepsiCo. If there’s one thing his journey has taught him, it’s that people should be at the heart of design—and business. “We need to focus on the needs, wants, and dreams of people in everything we do in our business, instead of thinking about financial goals, market share, and technology as a competitive advantage,” Porcini says in a new Author Talks interview. In his new book, The Human Side of Innovation: The Power of People in Love with People, Porcini traces his story, and explains how mentorship, sustainability, and design thinking are necessary ingredients for future innovation.
