Economic jitters. American CEOs’ collective economic outlook for October through December 2022 has fallen 11 points below the previous quarter, declining below the index’s long-run average for the first time since 2020, according to a survey of 142 CEOs of prominent US companies. While 40% expect to increase their employee base in the next six months—compared with 77% who planned to do so a year ago—executives are still planning for sales growth, some hiring, and capital spending. Crisis leadership lessons. As global executives consider an economic downturn, CEO confidence has dipped to a low not seen since 2008. Leaders who helped steer their companies through previous crises, including the Great Recession, come equipped with lessons for how to navigate through adversity. In times of crisis, companies need to build employee loyalty by constantly engaging with top reports, who may be worried about their jobs, says the CEO of one software company. Making high-performing workers feel valued should be a number-one goal, he adds. [Fortune]

Six priorities. The CEO is a company’s ultimate strategist. But with a slowing economy and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, managing complex organizations is much harder today. How do executives decide where to start? To find out, McKinsey spoke with hundreds of executives and found six priorities that CEOs are focusing on, including both defensive and offensive moves.
