To raise productivity through AI, some UK government leaders say their public institutions must address antiquated technology, limited access to quality data, and a digital-skills shortfall. As the Financial Times reports, a recent study reveals that more than six in ten UK government agencies say the need for good-quality data could hinder their efforts to adopt AI, while seven in ten note challenges in hiring and retaining workers with AI expertise. The study also found that the data sets needed to train AI tools are largely trapped within legacy computer systems. [FT] • Improving performance. In recent months, US government workers have fielded requests to document their daily accomplishments. But in a Marketplace interview, one organizational psychologist states that monitoring employees does not improve performance. Instead, this practice increases workers’ stress and decreases the likelihood that they will trust their supervisors. Research shows that employees excel when they have a sense of belonging, purpose, autonomy, and mastery of their work. [Marketplace] A McKinsey analysis of 95 recent projects to modernize federal agencies’ core IT found that 72% of them cost more than expected, took longer to complete, or both. On McKinsey.com • Potential savings. As the US seeks to redefine the role, scale, and scope of the federal government, productivity is once again in the spotlight. With the US national debt growing to $36 trillion, the renewed push is timely. McKinsey analysis finds that significant savings could be achieved by increasing productivity. According to McKinsey Partners Aly Spencer and Nikhil Sahni, the total productivity opportunity could be up to $1 trillion—almost 15% of the fiscal year 2024 enacted budget of about $6.8 trillion. • How to improve. To enhance efficiency, government budgeters can focus more on how financial resources align with mission outcomes. Traditional budgeting, which generally relies on historical spending, often overlooks the true costs of programs and fails to incentivize productivity. Instead, it’s crucial to start with a clear understanding of an agency’s mission and its intended outcomes. Aligning resources with these missions can help agencies identify areas where they might cut back and also set new baselines for performance. ByteByteGo May 1 ∙ Preview   READ IN APP   A system's usefulness depends heavily on its ability to communicate with other systems.  That’s true whether it’s a pair of microservices exchanging user data, a mobile app fetching catalog details, or a distributed pipeline pushing events through a queue. At some point, every system has to make a call: Should this interaction happen synchronously or asynchronously? That question surfaces everywhere: sometimes explicitly in design documents, sometimes buried in architectural decisions that later appear as latency issues, cascading failures, or observability blind spots. It affects how APIs are designed, how systems scale, and how gracefully they degrade when things break. Synchronous communication feels familiar. One service calls another, waits for a response, and moves on. It’s clean, predictable, and easy to trace. However, when the service being called slows down or fails, then everything that depends on it also gets impacted. Asynchronous communication decouples these dependencies. A message is published, a job is queued, or an event is fired, and the sender moves on. It trades immediacy for flexibility. The system becomes more elastic, but harder to debug, reason about, and control. Neither approach is objectively better. They serve different needs, and choosing between them (or deciding how to combine them) is a matter of understanding different trade-offs:  Latency versus throughput Simplicity versus resilience Real-time response versus eventual progress In this article, we’ll take a detailed look at synchronous and asynchronous communication, along with their trade-offs. A survey finds that mental health issues are increasing among the global workforce, as employees feel more stressed, take more time off due to illness, and ask their employers for increased support. As Euronews notes, one in three of the survey’s respondents—which included individuals in 16 countries—report having one or more mental health conditions. Mental health–related sick leave is also becoming more common, with more than one-quarter of respondents saying they took time off from work for mental health reasons. [Euronews] • Fostering productivity. One country in Oceania persistently struggles with low productivity, despite employees there spending more hours at work than their peers elsewhere do, a clinical psychologist notes in the Conversation. Mental health may be one reason: Research demonstrates that these challenges are linked to reduced productivity, as poor mental health can contribute to emotional fatigue, missed workdays, and an inability to focus. Employers that implement measures to improve mental well-being, such as wellness exams, can enhance both productivity and earnings. [The Conversation] Every $1 invested in expanding mental health interventions could generate an economic return of $5 to $6 in global GDP growth. On McKinsey.com • Global funding gaps. Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as depression and diabetes pose a significant threat to global health. Yet within this challenge lies an opportunity for profound change: investing in mental health, McKinsey Partners Erica Coe and Kana Enomoto and coauthors share. Around the world, mental health conditions (including substance use disorders) only receive about 2% of government healthcare funding. Addressing the $200 billion to $350 billion investment gap could help to transform the NCD epidemic and boost the global economy. • A healthier workforce. McKinsey Health Institute (MHI) analysis finds that implementing and scaling proven interventions globally by 2050 could meaningfully reduce the burden of mental health disease: by more than 40%, or 150 million disability-adjusted life years. This investment could also enable 60 million individuals to participate in the global labor force and enhance their productivity, potentially adding $4.4 trillion in GDP to the global economy by 2050.
