‘Golden age of innovation.’ Despite market challenges and dips in investment, innovation and interest in the tech sector remain strong, McKinsey technology experts Lareina Yee and Roger Roberts share on a recent episode of The McKinsey Podcast. Although tech investment dropped between 30% and 40%, some trends, such as generative AI (gen AI) and robotics, are continuing to see increasing investments, Yee reveals.
•
The influence of gen AI. Gen AI acts as a catalyst for many of the technology trends, such as analytical AI and machine learning, which have seen increasing interest and investment. The capabilities in gen AI are also very relevant for robotics, which is one of the featured trends in the McKinsey Technology Trends Outlook 2024 report. Listen to the full podcast episode on The McKinsey Podcast to learn more about two newer tech trends.

The quarter’s top themes
McKinsey&Company
At #1: The executive's reading list In the third quarter of 2024, our top ten posts from McKinsey Themes highlight middle managers, saying ‘no’ at work, top technology trends, and more. At No. 1 is The executive’s reading list, which features books recommended by global leaders—like McKinsey’s Bob Sternfels—to consider adding to your library. Read on for our full top 10.
2. What to read next: books on AI
Literature on artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere, and for good reason. McKinsey research estimates that generative AI could add between $2.6 trillion to $4.4 trillion annually to the economy while increasing the impact of all AI by 15 to 40 percent. Learn about the hot topic
3. Help yourself to these personal development books
You don’t need to wait for the new year to make positive changes in your life—you can start right now. Whether you’re taking steps to define your purpose, tackling big projects, or trying to curb overthinking, these personal development books just might give you the motivation you need to get started. What do companies comprising the Magnificent Seven and the Granolas have in common? They have captured investors’ fancy with a superpower, or an integrated set of people, processes, and technology that creates value by helping an organization do something better than its competitors. Fly above competitors
As India anticipates a century of independence in 2047, it is committing to sustainable and inclusive growth in its goal of becoming a developed economy. To understand how Indian enterprises can achieve the growth necessary to help propel the nation towards its centennial aspirations, McKinsey analyzed publicly traded companies over a 10-year period. 7 trends
Disagreeing at work about critical business problems can be constructive if done in a healthy manner. That’s according to McKinsey’s Chris Hartley and coauthors: “Contributory dissent allows individuals and groups to air their differences in a way that moves the discussion toward a positive outcome and doesn’t undermine leadership or group cohesion.” Flex your ‘no muscle’

Three keys to long-term organizational health
Lose the short-term metrics Brought to you by Alex Panas, global leader of industries, & Axel Karlsson, global leader of functional practices and growth platforms
Welcome to the latest edition of McKinsey Classics. We hope you find our perspectives useful. Let us know what you think at Alex_Panas@McKinsey.com and Axel_Karlsson@McKinsey.com.

Perfecting people management for long-term organizational health
Companies (the good ones, at least) invest heavily in their employees. But many struggle to effectively measure how their workers are contributing to the organization’s long-term success. That’s because measuring the capabilities that help companies thrive over the long term—leadership, innovation, employee motivation—is hard to do. So how do companies effectively measure contributions to corporate health?
Three core principles can help organizations perfect their people-management systems for the long haul. First, root out unhealthy habits. That starts with taking a hard-line look at managers’ contributions to long-term health and avoiding metrics that encourage short-term gains. Second, prioritize values, which includes senior management role modeling the company’s new commitments. Third, keep it simple. Pick a handful of meaningful metrics that are owned and updated by employees.
Traditional performance metrics often prioritize short-term gains at the expense of long-term health. To help ensure that your performance management can thrive over the long term, read our 2012 McKinsey Quarterly classic “Encouraging your people to take the long view.”Prioritize long-term corporate health Healthy organizations keep winning, but the rules are changing fast
Organizational health is (still) the key to long-term performance

Introduction to Generative AI
Iterative, Agile, Waterfall... What are the differences between these Software Development Life Cycle models?
The Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is a framework that outlines the process of developing software in a systematic way. Here are some of the most common ones:
Waterfall Model:
- A linear and sequential approach.
- Divides the project into distinct phases: Requirements, Design, Implementation, Verification, and Maintenance.Agile Model:
- Development is done in small, manageable increments called sprints.
- Common Agile methodologies include Scrum, Kanban, and Extreme Programming (XP).V-Model (Validation and Verification Model):
- An extension of the Waterfall model.
- Each development phase is associated with a testing phase, forming a V shape.Iterative Model:
- Focuses on building a system incrementally.
- Each iteration builds upon the previous one until the final product is achieved.Spiral Model:
- Combines iterative development with systematic aspects of the Waterfall model.
- Each cycle involves planning, risk analysis, engineering, and evaluation.Big Bang Model:
- All coding is done with minimal planning, and the entire software is integrated and tested at once.RAD Model (Rapid Application Development):
- Emphasizes rapid prototyping and quick feedback.
- Focuses on quick development and delivery.Incremental Model:
- The product is designed, implemented, and tested incrementally until the product is finished.
Each of these models has its advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of which to use often depends on the specific requirements and constraints of the project at hand.

How to Design a System Like YouTube?
Here’s a 9-step process:
The user creates a video upload request and provides the video files along with the details about the video.
The raw video files are uploaded to an Object Storage (such as S3).
Also, the metadata is saved in a database as well as a cache for faster retrieval when needed.
The raw video files are sent for transcoding to a special transcoding server. Transcoding is the process of encoding the videos into compatible bitrates and formats for streaming.
The transcoded video is uploaded to another object storage.
The notification for transcoding completion is sent to a special service via a message queue.
The Transcoding Status Handler updates the metadata DB and cache with the latest details of the video.
The user raises a video streaming request that goes to a Content Delivery Network (CDN).
The CDN fetches the video from the object storage for streaming. It also caches the video locally for subsequent streaming requests.

A CEO’s guide to being human
The Shortlist
Emerging ideas for leaders Curated by Alex Panas, global leader of industries, & Axel Karlsson, global leader of functional practices and growth platforms
Welcome to the latest edition of the CEO Shortlist, a biweekly newsletter of our best ideas for the C-suite. This week, we feature the latest book from McKinsey. We appreciate the opportunity to connect and hope you find our perspectives novel and insightful. Please let us know what you think! You can reach us at Alex_Panas@mckinsey.com and Axel_Karlsson@mckinsey.com. Thank you.
—Alex and Axel
Today, more than ever, exceptional leadership extends beyond strategy—it requires empathy, humility, authenticity, and ultimately, a very human approach. McKinsey’s latest book, The Journey of Leadership: How CEOs Learn to Lead from the Inside Out, helps leaders at all levels unlearn management and relearn how to be human. This USA Today national bestseller features never-before-heard reflections from leaders including Ed Bastian (CEO of Delta Air Lines), Makoto Uchida (CEO of Nissan Motor Corporation), Mark Fields (former CEO of Ford), Reeta Roy (CEO of Mastercard Foundation), and Stéphane Bancel (CEO of Moderna).
Among the ideas the book covers:•
A more open, collaborative style of leadership. Today’s complex issues such as digital transformation, inflation, disrupted global supply chains, scarce talent, a lack of diversity, cybersecurity, and climate change are beyond the ability of any one person to master.
•
The imperative for personal growth. Leadership is about more than those seemingly endless business-related tasks. It’s just as important to be aware of your values and shortcomings—so that you can first live up to your own standards and then lead others.
•
A hidden benefit of technology. Generative AI tools can free up time for leaders to spend on human-centric leadership. They can also give constant feedback on the effectiveness of executives’ leadership styles.
Read a short excerpt, watch the authors discuss the book, or order a copy. We hope you find these ideas inspiring and helpful. See you next time with more McKinsey ideas for the CEO and others in the C-suite.

Growing interest in EVs. As EV growth continues to unfold in Europe, automakers are developing more nuanced profiles of the average EV buyers they are targeting, McKinsey senior partner Andreas Venus and coauthors explain. To understand Europeans’ views on EVs, we recently polled more than 15,000 consumers in France, Germany, Italy, and Norway, learning that electrification is attracting much consumer interest in Europe. Of the car buyers in our survey who have not yet purchased an EV, 38% say their next vehicle will be electric.

In enterprise applications, nearly every request is executed within a database transaction.
Developers often use frameworks and libraries with declarative mechanisms to simplify transaction management.
The Spring framework, for example, uses a special annotation to arrange for method invocations to be automatically executed within a transaction. This annotation simplifies writing transactional business logic, making it easier to manage transactions in a monolithic application that accesses a single database.
However, while transaction management is relatively straightforward in a monolithic application accessing a single database, it becomes more complex in scenarios involving multiple databases and message brokers.
For example, in a microservice architecture, business transactions span multiple services, each with its database. This complexity makes the traditional transaction approach impractical. Instead, microservices-based applications must adopt alternative mechanisms to manage transactions effectively.
In this post, we’ll learn why microservices-based applications require a more sophisticated approach to transaction management, such as using the Saga pattern. We’ll also understand the different approaches to implementing the Saga pattern in an application.
The Need for Saga Pattern...
