Historically, across automated manufacturing floors, many individually computerized and de-centralized workloads, such as image processing, computer vision, networking, AI-inference and others, drove machine operations with different levels of control that enabled manufacturers to scale.
With the Internet of Things (IoT) and digitalization transforming industrial operations, more and more of these controls such as PLC, HMI, PAC, etc are now being centralized onto a common compute platform. Companies seek new ways to consolidate technologies and workloads, processing into as few physical components as possible. Such industry requirements form the basis of industry 4.0 modernization and give way to the principles of software-defined manufacturing on workload consolidation.
Workload consolidation unites multiple computerized operations onto fewer platforms, replacing separate purpose-built hardware machines with a smaller foundation of general-purpose compute technologies. Reducing hardware infrastructure and utilizing more of existing resources helps to optimize operations.

Barriers to employment. Many employers are no longer requiring job applicants to hold a college degree. Yet despite the global trend toward skills-based hiring, nontraditional and diverse candidates still face substantial challenges. A study of 2,000 US employers found that nearly 75% are focusing on skills when recruiting for some roles. But even when companies have inclusive hiring practices, HR managers who insist on certain requirements may still present a barrier to hiring underrepresented workers, according to the survey. Creating opportunity. Evaluating job candidates based on skills, rather than on credentials like a college degree, can improve diversity and create a more inclusive economy, McKinsey partners Bryan Hancock and Brooke Weddle share on a recent episode of McKinsey Talks Talent. Through skills-based hiring, many organizations are looking to provide more equitable pathways to opportunity for those who lack access to higher education. “If you look at who has the skills but not the degrees, those are disproportionately people of color,” Hancock says.

System design cheat sheet
We are often asked to design for high availability, high scalability, and high throughput. What do they mean exactly?
The diagram below is a system design cheat sheet with common solutions.
High Availability
This means we need to ensure a high agreed level of uptime. We often describe the design target as “3 nines” or “4 nines”. “4 nines”, 99.99% uptime, means the service can only be down 8.64 seconds per day.
To achieve high availability, we need to design redundancy in the system. There are several ways to do this:
- Hot-hot: two instances receive the same input and send the output to the downstream service. In case one side is down, the other side can immediately take over. Since both sides send output to the downstream, the downstream system needs to dedupe.
- Hot-warm: two instances receive the same input and only the hot side sends the output to the downstream service. In case the hot side is down, the warm side takes over and starts to send output to the downstream service.
- Single-leader cluster: one leader instance receives data from the upstream system and replicates to other replicas.
- Leaderless cluster: there is no leader in this type of cluster. Any write will get replicated to other instances. As long as the number of write instances plus the number of read instances are larger than the total number of instances, we should get valid data.High Throughput
This means the service needs to handle a high number of requests given a period of time. Commonly used metrics are QPS (query per second) or TPS (transaction per second).
To achieve high throughput, we often add caches to the architecture so that the request can return without hitting slower I/O devices like databases or disks. We can also increase the number of threads for computation-intensive tasks. However, adding too many threads can deteriorate the performance. We then need to identify the bottlenecks in the system and increase its throughput. Using asynchronous processing can often effectively isolate heavy-lifting components.High Scalability
This means a system can quickly and easily extend to accommodate more volume (horizontal scalability) or more functionalities (vertical scalability). Normally we watch the response time to decide if we need to scale the system.

Early bird shoppers. With major US retailers launching splashy sales promotions in early October, the season for holiday shopping has gotten off to an early start. Consumers are seeking to stretch their gift-giving budgets over a few months as they contend with elevated prices and historic levels of credit card debt. By October and November, roughly 6 in 10 marketers expect to burn through the majority of their holiday-related ad budgets, according to a report published in September. [WaPo]

Longer shopping season. After a year of modest sales growth, retailers face a critical holiday sales season. This year’s holiday shopping season started earlier and will last longer than it did in 2022, McKinsey senior partner Kelsey Robinson and coauthors share. While most consumers started their holiday shopping in October or earlier, 40% of consumers this year say that they intend to start holiday shopping in November, compared with 35% in 2022, according to our survey of more than 1,000 US consumers.

A digital euro. Cryptocurrency may have lost some of its luster. Even so, some financial leaders are keen to explore central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). Last month, European policymakers said that, following a two-year period of research, they were ready to take the next step toward developing a digital version of the euro. Central bank leaders say the move won’t much affect present-day financial structures; others disagree. Banks could be significantly affected by a potential decline in fees, one analyst stated. [FT]

Talking about tokenization. Tokenization, or the process of issuing a digital representation of an asset on a blockchain, is potentially a big deal. Industry experts have forecast up to $5 trillion in tokenized digital-securities trade volume by 2030, McKinsey partner Anutosh Banerjee and coauthors note. Tokenized assets can include physical assets like real estate or art, financial assets like equities or bonds, nontangible assets like intellectual property, or even identity and data.

Tokenized cash. Financial institutions are already beginning to tokenize cash. For instance, stablecoins are a type of cryptocurrency pegged to a physical currency (or commodity or other financial instrument). Since tokenization debuted in 2017, many financial-services companies have significantly grown their digital-asset teams and capabilities. As digital-asset teams mature, we may see tokenization increasingly used in financial transactions.
