Nonetheless, health leaders at a panel in March struck a note of optimism. With stigmatized topics such as menopause and menstruation being discussed more openly, things are changing, says a leader at a US research institute. Another encouraging sign? In 2024, UK medical schools will require students to complete training in women’s health. Still, a dearth of data makes it hard to truly understand wellness in women, the leader added. [Wired] • Unconscious beliefs. From discounting pain reported by women to assuming that White patients are likelier to comply with taking medicine, research suggests that hidden biases are all too common in healthcare. Providers’ decisions about treatment and diagnoses are likely influenced by their unconscious beliefs. These often focus on people’s appearance, gender, sexual orientation, and race. By mounting cameras in exam rooms and using AI to analyze doctor–patient interactions, some US researchers are helping to reduce implicit bias. [Science] Women represent approximately 40% of primary care physicians (PCPs) but nearly 50% of PCPs documenting diagnoses of key women’s health conditions. On McKinsey.com • Blind spots in healthcare data. Health-related data play a key role in delivering care. But despite rapid growth in healthcare data, notable gaps remain in women’s health, McKinsey senior partner Lucy Pérez and coauthors stress. For every one woman diagnosed with a women’s health condition, roughly four go undiagnosed, McKinsey analysis of US insurance claims data finds. Inconsistencies in diagnoses and biases in delivering care generate blind spots in real-world healthcare data sets that undermine understanding of disease states. • Documenting diagnoses. Female primary care physicians are disproportionately the physicians diagnosing women’s health conditions such as menopause and polycystic ovary syndrome, according to the claims data that McKinsey examined. Since claims data inform investment decisions in life sciences, blind spots in these data sets may contribute to a perception of less unmet need and less need for continued innovation. Such cognitive biases, however, might lead to flawed conclusions. For example, the halo effect is a form of social bias that can lead people to unthinkingly accept information offered by those they admire or like. To counter bias, pinpoint your first idea after considering a problem, and analyze the validity of that thought, says one clinical psychologist. [Business Insider India] • Blind spots in business. Cultural norms, one’s upbringing, and social experiences often generate blind spots in thinking, two UK-based business school professors explain. Unconscious biases factor into many decisions, including who is hired, promoted, or fired. An example is affinity bias, wherein people tend to like those who remind them of themselves. Since decision makers are likely to share an organization’s values and choose to promote them, companies can reduce hidden biases by enshrining diversity as a core value. [Financier Worldwide] Decision making can be clouded when people attribute others’ actions and motivations to the societal roles that they play. On McKinsey.com • Thinking traps. Role theory is a common obstacle to good decision making, McKinsey partner Tim Koller and coauthors share. This concept suggests that most people categorize themselves and others according to socially defined roles. For example, when a CFO recommends divesting an underperforming product line, her colleagues may dismiss her suggestion as classic CFO cost-cutting behavior. This role-based perspective allows them to discount the CFO’s idea out of hand without fairly evaluating its merits. • Focusing on facts. Organizations must encourage dissent and make it safe for every individual to share contrarian ideas. If the CFO could separate her idea to divest from her status in the organization, she might be treated more fairly. For example, the CFO could engage colleagues with a range of perspectives to help make objective cases for both investing in the asset and divesting. New digital platforms aim to limit food waste, creating more sustainable food systems. For example, a Mumbai-based IT company uses smart sensors to track the freshness of food products throughout the supply chain. The system assesses the shelf life of products like chips and fries by factoring in variations in temperature and moisture, as well as other changes. [WEF] • Produce price hikes. Drought in North Africa, devastating floods in Pakistan, bitter frosts in Central Asia, the war in Ukraine, and other issues have rattled the global food system, sending prices soaring. Across the globe, vegetable prices are surging, spurring some countries to ban the export of carrots, onions, and other staples of nutritious meals to safeguard supplies. These restrictions are limiting people’s access to fresh produce in markets around the world, the United Nations and the World Bank said in February 2023. [Bloomberg] Disruptions to the food system affect global health. About 3.1 billion people already cannot afford a healthy diet. On McKinsey.com • Risks to global breadbaskets. Disruptions to the world’s food system—such as climate change—are deepening the global food crisis. The world’s breadbaskets are at serious risk. Just five countries (China, the US, India, Brazil, and Argentina) produce 60% of the world’s food, reveal McKinsey Global Institute director Jonathan Woetzel and coauthors. Even within these countries, food production is highly concentrated in a few regions. Extreme weather events in those regions could affect a large portion of global production. • Food loss. Each year, an estimated $600 billion in food loss happens at or near the farm during or just after harvest. The loss of the food itself is bad enough, but the secondary effects are alarming, as well: the water consumption linked to food loss and waste amounts to approximately one-fourth of the world’s freshwater supply, according to McKinsey senior partner Clarisse Magnin-Mallez and coauthors. Space start-ups are developing spacecraft that can transport payloads to the lunar surface and back again. That could lay the groundwork for a future lunar economy that might include mining metals and extracting lunar ice for rocket fuel. Two US space start-ups are aiming for their robotic landers to touch down on the moon later in 2023, and a third company based in Japan already has a spacecraft heading there. [Bloomberg] • Space innovations. Public- and private-sector leaders are setting big goals for the new space race. From 3-D-printed, reusable rocket engines to satellites the size of microwaves, technological innovation abounds. One space start-up based in Bengaluru, India, offers imaging satellites that weigh roughly 33 pounds. These produce high-resolution visuals that exceed 150 bands of color from the infrared and visible spectrums. A space start-up in the US uses centrifugal force instead of rocket fuel to fling spacecraft into orbit. [Fast Company] If the current momentum continues, commercial funding for space ventures could surpass government funding for them in the next 20 years. On McKinsey.com • Investing in space. The cost to access space long proved prohibitive, undermining commercial-business cases. But recently, launch costs have fallen 95%, and satellites are becoming smaller and less expensive. At the same time, private companies, especially new space start-ups, are substantially upping their investment in the space economy, explain McKinsey global managing partner Bob Sternfels and coauthors. Private-sector funding in space-related companies topped $10 billion in 2021, close to a tenfold increase over the prior decade. • Opportunities in all sectors. Space will provide an opportunity for growth across all sectors, from semiconductors to agriculture, energy, and insurance. For instance, better satellite imaging might allow more insurers to assess risks and damages at remote locations more cost effectively. Improved resolution and greater image-sequencing frequency could help them pinpoint problems more clearly, eliminating the need for in-person visits. Consider three ways that leaders can begin to prioritize space—starting with setting a vision. Eight out of ten Bay Area inhabitants said that a lack of affordable housing is a serious concern, and nearly three-quarters cited homelessness as a big issue. That’s compared with seven out of ten people statewide who identified both as vexing problems. In 2022, the median cost of a single-family home climbed to $1.08 million in San Francisco. [The Mercury News] • Rising rents. With mortgage payments increasing in the San Francisco Bay Area, many residents are having to put aside the dream of owning their homes. Yet renting an apartment there has also become significantly more expensive. In late 2022, tenants paid an average rent of $3,224, an increase of 9.5% from the prior year. The Bay Area is among the top ten metro areas in the US with the highest rent-to-income ratios, according to Moody’s Analytics. [Axios] More than one million people in the Bay Area earn below 30% of the Area Median Income, and many spend more than 75% of their income on rent. However, it also hosts half of the unsheltered homeless population in the US, with a significant share in the San Francisco Bay Area. There, homelessness is the result of decades of systemic issues—such as historical redlining, reductions in affordable housing, and high housing costs—that have compounded and accelerated the crisis, assert McKinsey senior partner Alexis Krivkovich and coauthors. • Three distinct problems. In the Bay Area, the public conversation on homelessness can be challenging because commentators often refer to different aspects of the experience or journey. From our research, three distinct types of homeless experiences exist. Yet homelessness in the Bay Area is largely perceived and treated as a single problem.
