Maintaining independence. As the population of US seniors grows to 4.2 million this year, an overwhelming majority of older adults wish to “age in place,” remaining in their homes as they age. Newsweek reports that seniors’ capacity to live independently outside assisted living facilities depends on key factors such as the availability of top-notch medical care, cost of living, and transportation options. States that can offer these resources are likely to see better outcomes with the longevity of their older adult populations. [Newsweek]

Slow development. In the US, demand for senior housing far outpaces supply, MarketWatch notes. By 2030, over 564,000 additional units will be necessary to meet demand, yet only 191,000 are projected to be built at the present pace. Geopolitical changes are likely to slow this development, as the prices of building materials are set to rise. Since developing new senior-living facilities from scratch can be expensive, real estate companies are acquiring existing senior facilities to expand their offerings. [MarketWatch]

Resistance to senior housing. Although more populations are aging worldwide, a small share of older adults actually live in senior housing. In fact, only 5% of seniors currently live in senior housing in countries with the most developed senior-housing markets, McKinsey Associate Partner Sam O’Gorman points out. According to McKinsey Health Institute research, most older adults globally would prefer to stay in their homes, but many of them lack the accessibility features necessary to successfully age in place.

Creative solutions. To help homeowners enjoy a better aging-in-place experience, senior-housing operators could offer services to retrofit older adults’ existing homes, installing design features such as grab rails, sensors, and hoists. Additionally, improved communication by senior-housing companies about the available options beyond care or nursing homes can allow more older people to understand what’s available. Consider how industry leaders could make senior housing more attractive to older adults.

He is an iNARTE Certified ESD Engineer and one of the first 28 individuals to receive this designation from the Electrostatic Discharge Association in Malaysia.

He has a Degree in Electrical / Electronics. His experience in Electrostatic has been nearly 30 years with various exposures of manufacturing.

ABSTRACT

An internal combustion engine (ICE) is a heat engine where the combustion of a fuel occurs with an oxidizer (usually air) in a combustion chamber that is an integral part of the working fluid flow circuit. In an internal combustion engine the expansion of the high-temperature and high-pressure gases produced by combustion apply direct force to some component of the engine. The force is applied typically to pistons, turbine blades, or a nozzle. This force moves the component over a distance, transforming chemical energy into useful mechanical energy.

The term internal combustion engine usually refers to an engine in which combustion is intermittent, such as the more familiar four-stroke and two-stroke piston engines, along with variants, such as the six-stroke piston engine and the Wankel rotary engine. A second class of internal combustion engines use continuous combustion: gas turbines, jet engines and most rocket engines, each of which are internal combustion engines on the same principle.

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course is industry designed, to provide a broad understanding of the improvement methodology, concepts, and process. The methodology is presented with case studies and examples drawn from service, business process and manufacturing applications. The integration of manufacturing and maintenance is also addressed. With a heavy practice orientation, as much as a third of your time will be spent working through interactive practical exercises and assessments. This course is designed as an introduction to concepts and methodology.

Ir. When query performance degrades, most engineers tend to reach for the application code first to identify issues.

However, the root cause can also reside closer to the data at the storage level, and indexing could be the difference between a targeted lookup and a blind table scan that negatively impacts performance. With the right index in place, a query that once sifted through millions of rows can return results in milliseconds.

As datasets grow, the cost of scanning becomes untenable. Databases store data in pages, rows, and blocks, which are not optimized for arbitrary reads. Without indexes, every query that filters or sorts must inspect more rows than necessary. Multiply that overhead by thousands of queries per second, and systems start to buckle under I/O pressure.

Indexing solves this by narrowing the search space. Instead of traversing the entire table, the database engine uses a precomputed structure to jump closer to the target, much like flipping straight to the index of a book instead of reading every page.

But not all index types behave the same way. Some are built for fast key lookups. Others optimize range scans. Some improve performance for specific queries while adding overhead elsewhere.

What’s missing in many companies is the use of “contributory dissent,” or the capabilities required to engage in healthy, if divergent, discussions about critical business problems, write McKinsey senior partner Dana Maor and coauthors. Contributory dissent allows individuals and groups to air their differences in a productive way that moves the needle toward a positive outcome.

Five forces shaping consumer behavior

Enigmatic Americans. It’s a time of careful consumer spending, and US shoppers are uncertain if they should splurge on new furniture and cars or save for the future, MarketWatch notes. In a glimmer of optimism, a well-known index of consumer sentiment increased to 52.2 in late May—up from 50.8 earlier in the month, when respondents were more concerned about the economic effects of tariff policies. In a still uncertain environment, consumers are focused on value and are prioritizing essential purchases. [MarketWatch]

Spreading the pain. Some large international retailers—such as a sandal manufacturer and a jewelry maker—are considering increasing their prices in various regions to distribute the cost increases from US tariffs. As Reuters reports, this strategy may help these businesses prevent sharp price increases in the American market that could depress sales. In the meantime, central banks are keeping a close eye on this tactic, as it has the potential to increase inflation in other markets that have recently seen prices stabilize. [Reuters]

Even among consumers who say they’re concerned about rising prices, more than one-third still plan to splurge, especially those in Brazil, China, and the UAE.

Unexpected choices. At the start of the decade, consumers quickly adopted new behaviors because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Five years on, the world has reopened, but the pandemic-related uncertainty—and its effects on consumers—remain. Although consumers continue to worry about rising prices and inflation, they keep spending. Meanwhile, shoppers’ expectations for value and convenience lead them to make surprising choices: for example, trading down in one area while splurging in another, McKinsey Senior Partner Becca Coggins and her coauthors share.

Lingering crisis-era behaviors. As McKinsey analysis reveals, what once seemed like short-term, COVID-19-era adaptations have become lasting changes in consumer behavior. For instance, today’s consumers are still spending more time online and alone; they are also more intent on immediate gratification and convenience.
