Solving ‘the infinite workday.’ Today’s workers are overwhelmed with emails, meetings, and distractions. As Fortune notes, although AI is improving productivity, the gains are still not enough to keep up with the relentless pace of business, finds a Microsoft study of about 30,000 companies. To obtain AI’s full benefits, enterprises must transform organizational structures, redefine how work gets done, and reconsider how to gauge value. At companies that accomplish this, seven in ten workers describe their employers as thriving, the study shows. [Fortune]

Allure of flatter structures. Executives often adapt their corporate frameworks in the pursuit of better performance, MIT Sloan Management Review reports. What is less well known is how those shifts actually affect workers, explain experts at the University of Vienna. A review of more than 5,500 US businesses revealed that when companies become less hierarchical, their share of employees who are agreeable, conscientious, and open rises. How leaders communicate about the organizational changes, however, can affect outcomes. [MIT]

Executives told us that the top opportunities relate to technology—specifically, scaling AI and automation, accelerating digitalization, and expanding the value of data.

A strategy-to-performance gap. Having the right strategy can help companies beat the odds, but even the best strategy does not always deliver a strong performance. CEOs know that the right operating model can turn potential into results. Creating a high-functioning organization that consistently generates value, however, is challenging. Even high-performing companies have a 30% gap between their strategy’s full potential and what is actually delivered, which can be due to shortcomings in their operating models, McKinsey Senior Partner Alexis Krivkovich and coauthors point out.

The ‘Organize to Value’ system. Since today’s leaders must address many fast-moving trends, their operating models should anticipate and react to change just as quickly. McKinsey’s new approach to operating model design is based on 12 elements—such as purpose and talent—that can be tailored to an organization’s goals. Various types of documentations are involved in export & import activities. It is therefore important to understand the role of each document and its requirements in international trade. The Royal Malaysian Customs is the government agency that is responsible for nation's indirect tax policy and plays an important role in trade and industry. In Malaysia, Manufacturing Bonded Warehouse is known as Licensed Manufacturing Warehouse (LMW) established under the provision of section 65/65A of the Customs Act 1967. LMW was introduced in line with Government’s policy to further promote the development of the export-oriented industries. LMW enables manufacturing processes to be carried out in licensed warehouses subject to minimal customs procedures. This course is meant for employees from supply chain and supporting departments who are keen to enhance their knowledge and understanding on the Customs Documentation, Ruling, Facilities & LMW concepts.

Rising costs of trade. Midsize companies in the US face approximately $82 billion in new tariff-related expenses, one JPMorganChase Institute study finds. As Axios notes, the report represents one of the first efforts to quantify the costs for companies that depend on overseas trade. Midsize enterprises—that is, businesses that earn between $10 million and $1 billion each year—are more likely than other companies to import goods from countries with the heftiest tariff rates, including those in Asia. Seeking foreign trade zones. US companies have been exploring the use of foreign trade zones (FTZs) amid recent changes in tariffs, Marketplace reports. These zones are typically near airports, borders, and ports and enable businesses to source imported products duty free. Local authorities say that FTZs can stimulate local economies; in the past decade, one area has seen the growth of advanced manufacturing, including in the semiconductor, aerospace, and solar panel manufacturing industries. Of today’s 50 largest trade corridors, 16 could grow strongly, while nine corridors—primarily those that link advanced economies to China and Russia—could shrink sharply.

Trade patterns, transformed. Between tariff hikes, rising geopolitical tensions, and other disruptions, the global trade system is in flux. By detecting shifts in trade corridors—the connections between countries to exchange goods, services, and resources—it’s possible to understand how trade patterns are changing, McKinsey Senior Partner Olivia White and coauthors state. Their research finds that in a baseline scenario, global trade levels will grow by about $12 trillion by 2035, boosting today’s global trade value by about 35%.

Changing connections. Given the size of the global economy, a difference of a couple of trillion dollars in trade growth may not seem dramatic. But examining individual trade corridors makes the stakes much clearer. The total value at stake—that is, the difference between maximum and minimum value in each corridor—could amount to 31% of total projected trade in 2035, or $14 trillion. Discover which trade corridors may represent safe bets (for example, those connecting India and the rest of the world), cautious bets, and uncertain bets for multinationals.
