When a CEO is underperforming, shareholders often expect the company leader’s ouster. In practice, though, a corporate board may hesitate to dismiss the chief executive even when the CEO repeatedly underdelivers, experts reflect in Harvard Business Review. When it comes to holding top executives accountable, boards can take a few cues from directors with military experience, who are likelier to take decisive action if a CEO has performance issues. One way that a board can follow suit is to clearly define the leader’s responsibilities, so there are obvious links between the CEO’s specific tasks and the company’s broader goals. [HBR] • Shifting leadership norms. When it comes to management styles, does it take a hard-nosed leader to get good results? As Fortune reports, while a “command and control” leadership model has generally fallen out of favor, several of today’s prominent CEOs are focusing less on emotions and more on efficiency—whether that means enforcing strict productivity goals, reorganizing the business, or laying off workers. Yet even as competitive pressures may prompt some leaders to adopt a tougher mindset, friendliness and relatability are still valuable traits for leaders to possess. [Fortune] McKinsey research finds that as much as 45% of a company’s performance can be attributed to the CEO’s influence. On McKinsey.com • Early insights on CEO performance. CEOs have one of the most demanding and complex roles in any organization, so how do they evaluate their own performance? A survey of 100 CEOs, mostly from Asia, highlights chief executives’ strengths and challenges across six dimensions of leadership. According to McKinsey Senior Partner Gautam Kumra and coauthors, CEOs feel confident about their ability to manage their own personal effectiveness but most often struggle to engage with their boards, allocate company resources, and connect with stakeholders. • The importance of training. According to the survey’s preliminary results, CEOs tend to be least confident in their ability to tap into their board members’ expertise. What can executives do to improve in this dimension? The research finds that targeted learning and development can enhance performance, especially for newer CEOs. Those with less than two years of tenure who went through training report the most improvement in their board- and stakeholder-related capabilities. Rather than relying on a single powerful machine, these systems spread workloads across multiple nodes, often deployed across different servers, regions, or continents. Building distributed systems is popular because it offers improved scalability, enabling organizations to handle growing traffic by adding more nodes as needed. It also enhances fault tolerance. If one node goes down, the system can often continue serving requests, minimizing downtime and user impact. However, with these benefits come complexities—what many refer to as the “dark side” of distributed systems.  Coordinating multiple nodes over unreliable networks introduces challenges around data consistency, system synchronization, and partial failures. Developers must navigate layers of complexity that don’t exist in a single-machine environment, such as dealing with unpredictable message delays and deciding how to handle conflicting writes. Two critical considerations that consistently arise in distributed systems are latency and partition tolerance.  Latency, or the delay in communication between nodes, can degrade user experience and complicate real-time processing.
