Do you know what your customers want? This is a central question for leaders in all industries—and a particularly challenging one for consumer companies to answer, as people’s buying motivations and habits have become more unpredictable. McKinsey research shows that in the United States, consumers’ sentiment and their spending have been out of sync for the past couple of years after decades of moving in lockstep. This week, we look at how the leaders of consumer-facing businesses can better compete by recognizing and reacting to shifts in people’s purchasing decisions.

Turn disruption into growth

The COVID-19 pandemic altered customer behaviors in ways that, five years later, continue to shape the market for consumer products. Understanding the evolution of consumers’ habits and buying decisions can help companies turn uncertainty into opportunity, according to McKinsey’s Becca Coggins , Christina Adams , Kari Alldredge , and their coauthors. They identify five pandemic-era behavioral changes that persist today—among them: Consumers spend more time alone and online, they trust brand and product recommendations from friends and family more than from social media channels, and they prefer to buy from local businesses. “It’s not that today’s consumers are irrational; it’s that the old frameworks used to decipher their behavior no longer apply,” the authors say. They suggest four strategies for consumer companies to succeed in this dynamic environment, including getting closer to their customers, tailoring their business portfolio for growth, and improving their technological capabilities.

That’s the share of US consumers who cite both price and quality as “very important” or “somewhat important” to their buying decisions across categories, according to a survey on sustainable packaging conducted in March 2025. “While about a third of consumers said the same of environmental factors, value for money is clearly more top of mind for consumers in 2025,” note McKinsey Senior Partner David Feber and his coauthors.

“Consumers may still consider beauty to be an affordable discretionary item, but that doesn’t mean the industry should take for granted the ‘lipstick effect.’”

That’s McKinsey’s Kristi Weaver, Megan Pacchia, Sara Hudson, and their coauthors on how changing consumer preferences may affect the beauty industry’s growth. The “lipstick effect” refers to consumers’ tendency to continue buying modest luxury items, such as lipstick, even in a weaker economy. The authors observe that consumers are now spending more selectively based on how they perceive the value of certain beauty products. “Skin care items such as facial serums are more splurge-worthy than facial cleansers or lip balms, consumers tell us,” they say. “Products that address key concerns or have meaningful performance differentiation are likely to entice consumers to splurge.”

Like other consumer goods companies, fashion brands are investing in AI, analytics, and social media to better understand and entice their customers in a more uncertain business environment. McKinsey Senior Partner Gemma D’Auria says that digital tools are a key source of growth for newer, smaller brands. “They create very sticky communities because it’s not just about customer acquisition; it’s really about customer engagement,” she says in an episode of The McKinsey Podcast. While younger generations are a critical demographic for fashion companies, D’Auria stresses that “silver spenders” are also important to the industry’s growth. “The global population aged 50+ is growing faster than any other generation. They account for 38 percent of consumer spend today and for about half of growth in consumer spend,” she says. “It’s a call to action for fashion brands to think about what their strategy is to be relevant to and attract older consumers.”

How many people watch a newly released movie or TV show ? How long do people spend on certain websites or social media channels ? Media businesses have long viewed the size of their audience and the amount of time spent engaging with their content as critical measures of success. But new McKinsey research, based on a survey of more than 7,000 global consumers, suggests that they have overlooked a critical piece of the story: the quality of time that consumers spend with their products. Senior Partners Kabir Ahuja and Marc Brodherson and their coauthors have developed a new “attention equation” that determines the amount of valuable time consumers spend on media products, based on their focus and intent. Analyzing 20 primary media arenas, they find that live experiences such as sports, amusement parks, and concerts generate the most valuable consumer attention, while digital music, radio, and podcasts rank on the low end. The attention equation can help leaders “more effectively match content to context, better understand their consumers, and invest in and monetize the most valuable attention for them,” the authors say.

A new outlook for beauty brands

India’s love of K-beauty. Despite swiftly changing trends in India’s beauty industry, including the rise and fall of skin care companies, Indian consumers remain enthusiastic about the Korean beauty (K-beauty) industry, Fortune India notes. India’s burgeoning beauty sector and a wave of direct-to-consumer brands have helped the country become one of the world’s top investors in K-beauty businesses, trailing only South Korea and the United States, a recent report finds. More Indian beauty companies are also partnering with popular K-beauty businesses. [Fortune India]

Chinese beauty brands look abroad. A number of China’s homegrown beauty companies are eyeing deals with global competitors to extend their offerings, Reuters reports. Although the domestic brands are little known outside of China, they have achieved success in the Chinese market and gained market share at the expense of global brands. Still, an ongoing real estate slump and concerns over wage stagnation have curtailed Chinese consumer spending, making it tougher for Chinese beauty brands to keep growing domestically. [Reuters]

In this year’s Beauty Executive Survey, 75% of executives say they are doubling down on sales growth, and they expect growth to be less price driven.

Fresh growth tactics. The $450 billion global beauty industry has been booming, but is its momentum finally cooling? For years, demand for innovative beauty products drove strong sales and even greater pricing growth, with the sector expanding by 7% annually from 2022 to 2024. But now, McKinsey Senior Partner Kristi Weaver and coauthors explain, geopolitical and economic uncertainty, a saturated market, and changing consumer preferences pose serious challenges—all of which require a new growth strategy.

Savvy consumers. That said, there are still vibrant areas of progress, and the beauty market continues to grow. The authors expect the global beauty market to grow 5% annually through 2030. While brands have more ways to engage their consumers, customers’ preferences are evolving: They are value conscious, wary of hype, and intensely focused on product performance. Ron then spent two years as a freelance trainer before joining Evios (M) Sdn Bhd, a security alarm company as its Operation Manager, where he manages the company of over 30 employees. He displayed excellent leadership qualities in his position that often required him to solve matters of employee work performance and grievances, as well as overcome other challenges which arose from a change in the management team.

Due to his interest in training, Ron moved to Asia-Pacific Strategic Centre Sdn Bhd in 2004, an academic institution where he managed the centre and conducted training. His capability as a leader and trainer was so well-regarded that he was asked to head a new training centre in another educational institution in 2007. Since then, he has been the Corporate Training Manager for Knowledge Genius Sdn Bhd which has 8 other branches all over Malaysia. Circuit Analysis:
Learn how to analyze simple electrical circuits.
Explore series and parallel circuits and their properties.
Electrical Components and Devices:
Familiarize with common electrical components like resistors, capacitors, and inductors.
Understand the purpose and operation of switches, relays, and transistors.
Understand AC & DC

Recognizing common electrical components like switches, outlets, fuses, breakers, wires, and basic appliance parts.

Knowing proper safety practices around electricity, including the use of personal

MODULE 4.Understand the requirements of a 24VDC panel board

Familiarity with simple electrical testing tools like a multimeter to measure voltage and current. Important considerations:

Simple troubleshooting: check for continuity, check for leakages, check for faulty

With his management experience, he has used it in setting up and managed Technical Education Training Centers for industries and also the Malaysian Fuel Training Academy .As an Project Manager his primary role was to manage and coordinate the implementation of various project activities in ensuring quality and timeliness of activities and delivery of outputs.

Competencies in planning, program development, training needs and Human Capital Retention Management Program. Excellent written and spoken English, in the use of the computer and several applications, excellent interpersonal skills and communicate well with people. I have worked in a cross-cultural setting throughout his career.

As a Technical Training Consultant he, was able to educate Maintenance Technician and machine Operators from the manufacturing sectors to have a better approach towards handling Equipment and Machine Maintenance, in accordance with Increasing Productivity and Reducing Machine downtime while Instilling Cost Consciousness, Continuous Improvement and Creating Ownership at work place, this includes training .

Ambrose started his carrier with giant German MNC as at technician. Being a senior technician, he was managing his subordinates to be able to produce up to the management’s expectations and at the same time, provide quality service to upgrade the organization’s service. Having gained his credentials in the technical arena, he then joined a Malaysian- American joint venture organization manufacturing semi-conductors. He became the head of department and had since trained both lecturers and students on engineering aspects such as calibration, validation, hydraulics and pneumatics, etc. He is an academician indeed whereby he often contributes articles to the local newspaper and other engineering magazines.

At this company, the trainer was overseeing the production process In early 2004, Ambrose was appointed as a Technical Consultant for the prestigious Melaka Industrial Skill Development Centre (MISDC). Here, he was engaged in developing technical training programs and identify areas of improvement for the institution. INTRODUCTION

Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) is a language used on mechanical engineering drawings composed of symbols that are used to efficiently and accurately communicate geometry requirements for associated features on components and assemblies. GD&T is, and has been, successfully used for many years in the automotive, aerospace, electronic and the commercial design and manufacturing industries.

Success oriented industries and organizations which, require accurate and common lines of communications between engineering, design, manufacturing and quality should consider geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) as their mechanical drawing standard.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

At the conclusion of this 2 days program, participants will be able to:

- Gain knowledge on what GD&T is all about

- Explain the benefits of geometric tolerancing
